Classroom Procedures
Dear Parents & Students,
In order to guarantee an excellent learning climate for your child and all students, I will be utilizing the following Classroom Discipline Plan and Grading System.
My Philosophy
I believe that all of my students can behave appropriately in the classroom, at recess, and during school related activities. I will not tolerate a student stopping me from teaching, nor will I allow anyone to prevent any of my students from learning.
Rules
Students need to follow the six Character Counts traits at all times:
1. Trustworthiness
2. Respect
3. Responsibility
4. Fairness
5. Caring
6. Citizenship
Rewards
Students who behave appropriately will be positively rewarded with:
1. Verbal Praise
2. Star Character Slips
3. Chance Tickets
4. Classroom reinforcers to promote cooperation and good behavior of class as a whole.
Consequences
If a student makes the decision to break a rule, the following consequences will apply:
1st time: Verbal Warning
2nd time: Negative
3rd time: Negative and a Character Slip, which results in the student performing community service during a lunch detention.
Severe Disruption: Student is immediately sent to the Principal.
Assignments
1. All assignments are to be completed by the student and turned in on time.
- Assignments that are submitted one day late will have 10% deducted from the final grade.
- If an assignment is two or more days late, there will be a 25% deduction taken off of the final grade.
- If the student can give the teacher a written note, from a parent, with an acceptable reason for the tardiness of the assignment, an extension will be given and late points will not be deducted.
- Late assignments will be accepted anytime during the quarter in which they are due: however, the maximum credit it may earn will be 75% of the total possible.
- Late points will not be taken off absence work, as long as it is completed in as many days as the student was absent. In other words, if your child was sick for four days, your child will have four days to make up all of their absence work. Please write Absent at the top of all assignments that are being turned in late due to an absence.
Assignment Logs
Every child will be provided with their own Assignment Log. As a class we will fill out our Assignment Logs DAILY. There will be a box for your child to write in the day's assignments for each subject. Each assignment they complete they will put a check mark next to, each assignment that is not completed they will put an "H/W" next to. This will indicate to you that that assignment is homework and needs to be completed that night.
The students are required to have a parent's signature, or initials, in the signature box, each and every night. This indicates to me that they have shown their Assignment Log to a parent and the parent has been made aware of any homework their child may have had that night. I will then check the children's Assignment Logs the following day for parent signatures. I will sign their Log at that time. Students are allowed to have their Logs unsigned one night per week, the second night they are not signed, they will be given a negative.
I will sometimes write notes to you in the Assignment Log, and you should feel free to do the same to me. Since both the parent and the teacher check Logs daily, this is an effective, timely way to communicate needs, concerns or praises.
Progress Reports
Progress Reports will be sent home at the midterm and the week prior to the end of the grading period. Parents should review the report with their child, add comments if desired, sign and return the report by the date indicated on the Progress Report. If a Progress Report is not returned by the date indicated on the report, the parents will be notified.
Missing Assignment Reports
Several times a quarter I will give the students who have missing assignments a Missing Assignment Report. If a student has missing assignments they will be assigned lunch detention, where they will be expected to work on the missing assignments. The Missing Assignment Reports indicate whether the assignment was missing because of an absence or just not completed and turned in on time.
Newsletters Home
Every other week I will send home a newsletter updating you on what we are studying in each subject. In the newsletter you will also find important dates such as test dates, report/project due dates and upcoming special events. Please look over these newsletters carefully as they will have a lot of important information in them.
It is in your child's best interest that we work together to enhance their academic environment in school. The school rules and Classroom Procedures outlined in this packet have already been discussed with your child; however, please review both the school rules and the Classroom Procedures with your child. Should you have any questions, please contact me at school at 623-445-5559, which is a direct line to the classroom, or email me at Jodi.Dougherty@dvusd.org.
Thank you for your support in helping to make this a wonderful school year!
